Madeleine Bazil (b. 360ppm, USA) is a multidisciplinary artist and writer interested in memory, intimacy, and the ways we navigate environments—real and imagined.

Her directorial debut, Grandpa Ernest Speaks, has screened in film festivals globally and has been described as a ‘nuanced poetic representation of an intensely subjective experience’. Madeleine writes Where the Leaves Fall Magazine’s weekly arts and environment column, Confluences. She is represented for copywriting by Letterhead, and works as an independent video editor for social-impact and nonprofit clients worldwide. As a photographer, she has exhibited in the UK, US, and South Africa. Her poetry and essays have appeared in various journals, and she was long listed for Palette Poetry’s 2023 Rising Poet Prize

Madeleine holds an MA with distinction in Documentary Arts from the University of Cape Town, where she researched the relationship between post-traumatic memory and the archive. Previously she earned a first-class degree in English Literature from the University of St Andrews, receiving the Caroline Wyatt Fenty Memorial Prize for best undergraduate dissertation in the School of English.
